7 Most Popular Summer Activities

One of the most common questions that we hear is: “What is there to do at Cabin Creekwood?”

A good question, to be sure. Because even if your main focus is coming to rest, relax, and recuperate from the busyness of life, most of us don’t want to just sit. We need a little bit of activity to keep our getaway from becoming boring.

So here are the 7 most popular summer activities while at Cabin Creekwood.

Hiking
Whether your idea of a fun hike is a short jaunt around a lake, or a 23 mile trek through the wilderness, Cabin Creekwood is the place for you. We can provide information and recommendations for a variety of hikes, including waterfalls and overlooks, easy or strenuous.

Scenic Drives
Two of the most popular scenic drives in the United States are nearby. The Blue Ridge Parkway, 2 miles from Cabin Creekwood, traverses 469 miles of mountaintop between Waynesboro, VA and Cherokee, NC. The Skyline Drive, 15 miles away, is the main road through the Shenandoah National Park. Both drives boast a myriad of incredible views, with opportunities of seeing wildlife around every corner.

Horseback riding
Two stables are within a 20-30 minute drive, Appalachian Horse Adventures and Star B Stables. We have personally experienced both rides, and our guests have nothing but positive things to say as well. Star B is in the Shenandoah Valley, providing views of rolling terrain and distant mountains. Appalachian is in the Blue Ridge.

Canoeing/Kayaking
Getting out on the water is a relaxing way to spend the day. Although Cabin Creekwood is no longer able to offer canoe and kayak rentals, options for a trip down the river are available a little drive away.

Swimming
Some guests prefer our 20×40 in-ground swimming pool, while others like the atmosphere found on the Sherando Lake beach.

Fishing
Bass, catfish, bluegill, and trout. All are likely candidates to be on your hook at Sherando Lake. If stream fishing for trout is a bigger appeal, Back Creek is just ¼ mile away, and the South River Special Regulation Area provides nice sized fish. There’s even a local guide service if you’d like to try your hand at fly fishing.

Golf
Numerous golf courses are within a short drive. Check out Devil’s Knob at Wintergreen Resort, or the Stoney Creek golf course on the other side of the ridge. For those on a tighter budget, Swannanoa Country Club provides incredible mountaintop views, even if the clubhouse could use some updating.

So what will it be? Perhaps hiking one day, horseback riding the next, and golfing the day after that. Whatever your choice of activities, Cabin Creekwood is “your truly restful getaway!”
