Virginia Festival of the Book
Held every March, the Virginia Festival of the Book is the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities event that honors written words with readings, panel discussions and book singings. There are fun adult and children's programs during the days long festival.
Monticello's 4th of July Celebration
Monticello is the home of Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd President of the United States and author of the Declaration of Independence. Each 4th of July holiday, this grand historic home honors the founding of our country and Jefferson's prominent role in history. Monticello is great to visit year around and it is a designated World Heritage Site.
Virginia Film Festival
The Virginia Film Festival is held in the fall each year and is hosted by the University of Virginia. In years past, over 70 films have been screened and more than 80 guest speakers and artists have participated in the vent.
The City Market
The City Market is an open air market where farmers, gardeners, bakers and other craftspeople sell their goods and products. All goods are homegrown, home backed or homemade. It is open every Saturday April thru the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
Steeplechase Racing
Steeplechase racing has been a major part of historic Charlottesville since the races first began in May 1978. Each race typically draws between 18,000 and 23,000 people. The races are held the last Saturday in April and the last Sunday in September. The Fall Race Meet is Family Day at the Foxfield Races and horse related activities for children are available.
Ash Lawn Opera Festival
The Ash Lawn Opera Festival brings lively opera and other musical performances at The Paramount Theatre in downtown Charlottesville. There are educational programs for children and adults as well as professional training for emerging artists and interns.
Carter Mountain Orchard
Carter Mountain Orchard opens in early July and is a great place to browse for local crafts, fresh produce, jams and jellies and other gifts. There is a Pick Your Own peach and nectarine orchard and you can always Select Your Own peaches, apples and nectarines. In the fall, you can find gourds, Indian Corn, mums, and tons of pumpkins. The orchards overlook the city of Charlottesville VA and the views are amazing. This farm is a must stop!
Virginia Discovery Museum
The Virginia Discovery Museum is a wonderland for children ages 1 thru 10. The museum features galleries of fun, interactive science, history and art exhibitions. The museum also has a beautiful, historic Carousel which was donated by Fred W. Scott of Bundoran Farm, North Garden VA. It features six painted aluminum horses; the horses are 1910 Mangell's castings from an Illions carving. Marcus Illions is famous for being one of the best known carvers of carousel animals. According to appraisers, this carousel is the last kiddie carousel of its kind in the country.
University of Virginia
The historic grounds of the University of Virginia were planned by Thomas Jefferson and feature a beautiful Rotunda and Lawn as well as gorgeous gardens enclosed by serpentine brick walls. The grounds at UVA are also a designated World Heritage Site.
