Sherando Lake Recreation Area

sherando lake recreation areaSherando Lake Recreation Area is a great place to visit. It is situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains and is known locally as the jewel of the mountains, where visitors enjoy hiking, fishing, swimming and relaxing on the sandy beach.

Sherando Lake Recreation Area sits in between Sherando Lake and Upper Sherando Lake at an elevation of about 1,800 feet. Upper Sherando is the largest, encompassing 25 acres of cool waters. Both lakes are fed by the South Fork Back Creek.
Lower Sherando is the largest lake, encompassing 25 acres of cool, spring-fed waters. Upper Sherando Lake is the smaller lake at 7 acres, available for fishing only. The lower lake is available for swimming, fishing or relaxing on the sand beach.

Many hiking opportunities abound, including the Blue Loop Trail, the Lakeside Trail and the Torry Ridge Trail that heads to Bald Knob.

Weekend campfire programs are held at the amphitheater Memorial Day through Labor Day. Other events include a kid's fishing day in May and Smokey Bear's Birthday Celebration in August.
The nearest groceries, fuel, ice and firewood are located at convenience stores along the state road leading to the entrance to Sherando Lake.

A golf course and ski resort with wonderful scenic overlooks are within 10 miles of Sherando Lake. Other nearby attractions include a Frontier Farm Museum, a fish hatchery and horseback rides.
